English Half Marathon 2010

The centre of the village was subject to traffic restrictions for a few hours on Sunday 3rd October to allow the English half Marathon to come through Appleton Thorn.

Following feedback received after the first event last year, the organisers went to great lengths to warn about road closures for two weeks before the race. The noisy music and announcements were also curtailed this year.

Unfortunately runners in this year’s race experienced torrential rain for most if not all of the course, making the 13+ miles even more arduous.

Participants, including a number of village residents, arrived in Appleton Thorn having climbed steadily up from Warrington via Broad Lane then Grappenhall Lane. They passed the six mile mark just as they left the village on their way towards Stretton.

Runners came back through Appleton Thorn once more, via the top of Green Lane before heading down Lumb Brook Road, past Grappenhall Heys, over the Cantilever Bridge and onto the finish point in Victoria Park.

Congratulations to all runners and here’s looking forward to next year’s event.
